The Strange Case of the Carneillon Robes

Written by Chris

For anyone that has played Assassin's Creed Unity, you should know of the character Thomas de Carneillon. For anyone unfamiliar, he's the Assassin that turns up in the games prologue to kick some Templar ass!

He wears a Levantine style robe, almost exactly like Altaïr's except the colours are different. Now this is where things get weird. There is at least five versions of this robe in the game, yet most people will only ever see two of these.

The versions that most people will see are the striped brown robe that Thomas himself is seen wearing in the beginning of the game. The second version is the navy blue robe that you can unlock for Arno by completing all the Nostradamus enigmas.

So what about the other three I hear you ask? Well, they're only seen on Thomas in the beginning cutscene(s), and only by doing some convoluted stuff to get them to show.

I've managed to get this to work on both the Xbox and PlayStation versions of the game. However it seems to be completely random to what version of the outfit will show up.

So let me break down how it's done. Playing as the Templar at the start of Unity, you will chase Thomas around the castle grounds for a minute before he disappears from the cloud of a smoke bomb, he then reappears and attacks you. This is your first proper look at his outfit.

You fight and he eventually hits you with a type of flashbang. You chase him again and another fight breaks out. Eventually triggering another cutscene and you get another look at Thomas before the end of the prologue plays out.

After the first fight, if you pause the game and change the blood settings to off, and then restart the game. When the game loads back up, you will put back to the point of the first fight and Thomas's armour should have changed.

From the pictures you can see there is a version with a red design. One with a dark navy, almost black design, and then what looks like a dark green with rose pattern design. All these designs, in my opinion are much nicer then the ones we actually see.

As mentioned before, what design shows up seems to be completely random. My best guess is that all the designs were put into the game and they meant to decide on one, and then either forgot to take the rest out or didn't expect them to materialise in-game after just changing some settings.

So the two questions I still have are, why did they pick the ugliest one for Thomas to wear in the cutscene?, and why did they not allow you to choose all of these designs in-game for Arno's version of the robes?

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk about glitching robes :D
